Hasselt – Tongres line fully renovated during a marathon weekend of works - 16/08/2017

This weekend, line 34, the strategic line between Hasselt – Tongres, has recently undergone major renovation.  The renovation works were carried out over a period of 72 hours, without any interruption on this 25km line. The full route has been modernised, to improve the safety and quality of the rail traffic.

Multi-layer modernisation

In order to minimise the impact on the railway traffic, Infrabel has undertaken a veritable marathon weekend of works. The massification of operations proved to be successful. This method consists of carrying out numerous works in different places, within a very short time frame. From Sunday 13th August (00:00) to Wednesday 16th August (04:30), tens of colleagues, several work trains and site cranes assiduously participated in renovation works between Hasselt and Tongres.

Rails and points were renovated at Hasselt station.

  • Rails were renovated, cabling works were carried out, and trenches were dug on the Hasselt – Bilzen section.
  • Rails and crossings were renovated on the Bilzen – Tongres section, the berms were mowed and the Eldersbroek level crossing was even completely renovated.
  • At Tongres station, a work train carried out  maintenance work on the overhead lines on all the tracks with platforms.

Replacement bus service and deviations

In order to ensure that the works proceed smoothly, four level crossings were closed to traffic. Deviations were put in place, in collaboration with the communities and local police. Since all rail traffic was interrupted between Hasselt and Tongres, SNCB provided a replacement bus service.

The main line through Limburg has also undergone  extensive modernisation work, thanks to the constructive collaboration between the different parties concerned. The full cost of the renovation project reached 4 million Euros, as part of Infrabel's programme regarding the renovation and maintenance of the rail infrastructure.
