In tune with the environment (Planet)

Environmental issues form an integral part of our day-to-day activity.

Power consumption and renewable energy

Infrabel works to reduce its power consumption and supports renewable energy.

In Antwerp, 16,000 solar panels (covering an area of 50,000 m²) have been installed on the roof of a railway tunnel on the high-speed line  between Antwerp and Amsterdam. The solar tunnel generates 3,300 MWh of electricity per year.

In late 2015, the first wind-powered train was brought into operation after the first seven wind turbines were put into service at the Greensky wind farm in Gingelom. This wind farm, which is situated alongside the Leuven-Liège high-speed line and the E40 motorway, is one of the biggest in Belgium. Trains on three lines are now powered by green energy. This wind farm enables us to reduce our CO2 emissions by 15,000 tonnes per year.

Infrabel also offers ecological solutions for the work-related travel of our employees. Through our Mobility department, we encourage our staff to use more sustainable forms of transport (bicycle, car-sharing, public transport etc.), as well as electric cars and the Blue-bike cycle hire network. Training courses in green driving are also organised.

Environmentally-friendly site management

Infrabel strives to manage its sites in an environmentally-friendly way. 13 Infrabel sites have already been awarded ISO14001 certification.
Implementation of the ISO 14001 standard involves commitments such as defining environmental targets, compliance with environmental legislation, strict application of certain practices (e.g. careful storage, use and waste collection in the case of hazardous substances), efforts to save energy, water and natural resources, the management and control of pollutants released into the air, water and soil, staff training etc.
