Punctuality report 2018
Overall punctuality for passenger traffic
Trains on time or with a delay of less than 6 minutes
2017 | 2018 | |
---|---|---|
Before neutralisation | 88,3% | 87,2% |
After neutralisation | 92,4% | 91,7% |
Assessed according to the number of passengers | 86,2% | 85,3% |
Measured over the entire journey | 85,9% | 85,1% |
Including trains cancelled (without neutralisation) | 87,0% | 85,5% |
In order to obtain an overall view of punctuality, whatever the reasons for delays, consult the before “neutralisation” figure. Neutralisation consists of not taking account of delays resulting from external factors and other major investment work (RER, etc.).
With the punctuality rate “assessed according to passenger numbers”, the delay for a train carrying a large number of passengers carries more weight than that for a less busy train.
Punctuality is also “measured over the entire journey”: train delays are not only taken into account on arrival at the final station, but also throughout the journey.

Responsibles for train delays and cancellations
Different stakeholders each have a role to play in train punctuality. These are mainly the rail network manager (Infrabel), operators (such as SNCB) and third parties.
Reasons for the longest delays
- Damage to rolling stock
- Damage to infrastructure
- Incidents on foreign networks
- Trespassing
- Collision person
