RER puts Brussels car traffic on a sideline

A train to Brussels every 15 minutes during peak hours? By 2015, the Regional ExpresNet (RER in its French abbreviation) will make that possible. Within a radius of 30 km around Brussels, travellers will not have to wait more than 15 minutes for a train.

Entering and leaving Brussels will be extremely efficient

With the RER project, Infrabel makes short shrift with today's mobility problems. Commuters will be able to travel to Brussels quickly and will also get to their destination in the capital quickly - without a car! The smooth-running RER network will reduce car volumes on the major traffic axes and in the residential neighbourhoods.

Twice the track = twice the capacity

Two tracks for local trains and two tracks for the fast trains. With the RER project, Infrabel is putting the five most important rail axes in Brussels on four tracks:
  • Brussels – Halle (L 96): four tracks and the new high-speed line between Brussels and France will increase capacity. Halle will be getting a new station. And the stops at Vorst-South, Ruisbroek, Lot, Buizingen and Lembeek will be fixed up.
  • Brussels – Louvain (L 36): four tracks, including the new high-speed line between Brussels and Germany will provide better connections. In Zaventem and Kortenberg, the trains will stop in a new station. And the stops at Haren-South, Diegem, Nossegem, Erps-Kwerps, Veltem and Diegem have also been renovated.
  • Brussels - Denderleeuw (L 50 A): the expansion of the line to four tracks is scheduled.
  • Brussels - Ottignies (L 161)the expansion of the line to four tracks is currently underway.
  • Brussels - Nivelles (L 124): the expansion of the line to four tracks is currently underway.

Fast and inexpensive transfers

More tracks means more capacity. The stations and stops of the RER network - 120 of which Infrabel is modernising - can handle twice as many trains. And we are also streamlining the connections with the other public transport. So travellers can quickly transfer to trains, trams, busses and undergrounds. Favourable rates will stimulate combined travel.

Working to schedule

The RER project requires major infrastructure projects. Laying a new line is preceded by substantial civil engineering work. Infrabel is preparing for laying the line by doing ground work and making modifications to bridges, tunnels and other structures. Completed: When that work has been completed, it will be time to lay the track. We will make the line ready with ballast, concrete ties and track. After the signalling installation and communications equipment has been installed, we will run the overhead power lines and flip the switch to turn them on. At every stage, the quality and safety will be monitored rigorously.
