Lillois Nord

Infrabel will carry out work on a 3.1km section between Rue Fontaine Saint-Martin and the East Ring. In order to allow the simultaneous passage of RER trains and direct trains on the line connecting Brussels to Nivelles (L124), two tracks will be added to the existing tracks between Uccle and Nivelles. As part of this work site, there are also plans to extend the railway platform, improve about ten structures and modernise the Lillois station.

Why are these works necessary?

This work aims to facilitate arrival into and departure from Brussels and to curb the increase in road traffic, which is currently choking up the capital. Eventually, travellers will be able to enjoy the increased frequency of trains (on average 4 trains an hour at peak times), within a 30km radius of the capital. Infrabel is therefore implementing a sustainable mobility policy, in order to offer a valid alternative to the motor car.

Which works does Infrabel perform?

As part of this work, Infrabel will be building two new rail tracks, to the east of the existing tracks.

In order to facilitate this upgrading to four tracks, Infrabel will also redevelop around ten structures:

  • The bridges at Rue Fontaine Saint-Martin and Rue du Jacquier.
These bridges will be widened to allow the addition of two tracks.
  • The level crossing at Rue du Moulin.
This level crossing will be removed.
  • The Rue Sainte-Gertrude underpass.
This underpass will be extended and a new underpass for pedestrians will be built between Rue Verte and Rue Sainte-Gertrude.
  • The level crossing at Rue René Francq.
This level crossing will also be removed and replaced by an underpass.
  • The bridge at Rue du Berger.
This bridge will be redeveloped for use by pedestrians and cyclists. Stairs will allow access to the two side platforms at Lillois station. The central platform will be accessible via the future Rue René Francq underpass.
  • The bridge at Rue Rivelaine.
This bridge will be demolished and replaced by a wider bridge. After this work, the new road under the bridge will have two 3.5m wide traffic lanes and two new 3m wide pavements.
  • The bridge at Rue Motte des Bergers.
This bridge will be replaced by a 190m long covered cutting. Part of this cutting will be covered over with vegetation to allow wildlife to cross over the tracks.
  • The bridge at Rue les Hayettes.
    This bridge will be extended.

The passenger building at Lillois station will be demolished. New platforms will be built and car parking spaces established around the station.

What are the next steps?

This is civil engineering work that will be followed by railway equipment work.

What is done to prevent hindrance?

Impact assessments have been carried out in order to determine the measures to be implemented so as to limit disruption caused by the increase in rail traffic. These assessments have led, most notably, to Infrabel erecting anti-noise walls over this 3.1km stretch on both sides of the rail tracks.

Furthermore, Infrabel, in association with the engineering agencies involved, will be conducting assessments on properties located immediately next to the work site before its commencement and  will continue to do so after the works have been completed.

Finally, we try to limit night and weekend work whenever possible. This type of work is sometimes unavoidable since rail traffic must be maintained during the day. When this occurs, we try to warn the residents concerned beforehand through direct mailing.
