Greenery and constructions along the railway

Pruning trees at the side of the track? Our guidelines for spraying? How much distance must there be between greenery and constructions and the track?

Frequently asked questions

Why are trees along the sides of railway lines pruned?

The most significant reason for this is safety. This enables us to avoid trees falling onto the tracks and the consequences thereof. In addition, the visibility of signs and approaching trains must be assured at all times.

How many metres from the tracks must trees or shrubs be planted?

In order to guarantee the safety of train traffic and passengers at all times, there are guidelines for distances between plants and the line.

The general rule is that trees must be lower than the distance to the tracks.

How much distance must there be between constructions and the track?

In order to guarantee the passage of our maintenance teams along the tracks, there are legal requirements in relation to the minimum distance from constructions to the tracks.

We recommend that you contact the Local Residents Information Unit in this regard. You can reach us on 0800 55 000. We can provide all of the necessary guidelines for you to carry out your project.

What are the guidelines for spraying along the railway line?

The use of pesticides is kept to a strict minimum by Infrabel.

The ballast zone and a number of clearly outlined zones can be sprayed. This treatment is vital in order to ensure train safety and to enable the passage of our maintenance teams along the tracks.

On the basis of an efficient environmental policy, the SNCB group successfully reduced the use of pesticides by half between 1990 and 2005. This evolution will be further supported in the future.

The spraying of a carefully defined zone is essential to ensure safe train traffic and the passage of maintenance crews
