Sustainable mobility

Rail traffic uses less energy per passenger and per ton-kilometre than other means of transport. In other words, the more people and businesses use trains, the more the environment will benefit.

Rail traffic as part of the solution

Infrabel aims to encourage sustainable mobility and a transition to rail traffic. Moreover, we contribute to the reduction of the average energy consumption per passenger-kilometre or per ton-kilometre. This can only benefit energy efficiency!

30% fewer CO2 emissions

The European railway community is committed to generating 30% fewer CO2 emissions per transport by 2020 compared to 1990 levels. In Belgium we have already achieved this target. But Infrabel wants to make even more of an effort by:

  • choosing green energy where possible when negotiating new energy contracts.
  • facilitating the production and use of renewable energy.

Sail train

Together with several municipalities and Electrabel, Infrabel is planning to build a wind farm with 20 wind turbines along the Leuven-Liège high-speed rail line. In time this wind farm will generate 36 GWh a year: This amounts to 2.5% of the electrical traction energy to power the Belgian rail network, or a reduction of 60,000 tons of CO2 emissions a year. So you might say that trains will be like sailboats, blown along by the wind.
