Raising awareness of suppliers and staff

Infrabel aims to contribute to a greener society through its purchasing policy and its customer relations. In so doing, Infrabel does not overlook its own staff.

Suppliers and contractors

Infrabel specifications increasingly include provisions on sustainable materials, green technologies, contractors who sort waste, and so on. Infrabel focuses not only on the cost of the product or service but also on the total cost of the product or service to society. Infrabel, for example, also reviews CO2 emissions when purchasing new rolling equipment.

Customers

Infrabel wishes to raise awareness among its commercial partners about the impact of railway operations on the environment: energy consumption, greenhouse gases, noise and environmental risks.

Infrabel will make available specific equipment to its partners to measure energy consumption in traction units in order to raise awareness among its partners and support them in providing more sustainable railway transport. In this way, Infrabel can continue to encourage its partners to limit their energy consumption.

Staff

Infrabel wishes to raise awareness among its personnel about the environment and about sustainable behaviour in order to ensure maximum return on all its environmental efforts. Infrabel does this by

  • Organising training sessions about sustainability and applicable environmental legislation,
  • Conducting internal and external campaigns on sustainability and the outcome of Infrabel’s environment policy,
  • Providing support to employees with a dedicated team with the aim of reducing the environmental impact. Meanwhile, Energy Supervisors closely monitor energy consumption in 150 sites and take local action where necessary.

Certification

Infrabel aims to implement the internationally recognised ISO 14001 environmental management system in its four workshops and 22 infrastructure logistics centres. The Bascoup workshop already obtained this certificate in 2006.
